Marville Marquetry Oval Desk | Classical French Double-Sided Writing Desk with Gilt Bronze Gallery and Pedestal Drawers - EKAR FURNITURE
Most desks are designed against a wall, and the Marville Marquetry Oval Desk by EKAR FURNITURE is designed for the opposite, since it is a classical French writing desk shaped to be seen from every side. Its top is a broad oval, softly boat-shaped, held above two drum-like pedestal supports that carry the drawers, leaving the space between them open for the legs. A pierced gilt-bronze gallery runs around the edge of the top, so the desk has a defined horizon line rather than a plain edge, and the surfaces are covered in fine marquetry worked in warm walnut, kingwood, and deeper reddish-brown veneers with light gilt banding between the fields. Read from the front it looks like a formal bureau; walk around it and it holds the same quality on every face. We build it as a bespoke custom furniture piece in our Foshan furniture factory, to your own size and layout.

The top is the decorated face of the desk, and it is composed in panels rather than covered in one pattern. Across the main field, medallions are set within shaped cartouches, each worked as a detailed floral basket in light golden tones on a dark ground, bordered by fine banding that follows the curve of the oval. Around and between these panels the veneer is laid as radiating sunburst parquetry, thin wedges of alternating light and dark timber running outward from a centre point, so the surface appears to move under light as you pass it. On the curved ends and across the faces of the two pedestals, the same fan pattern is repeated and bent around the radius, which is the difficult part of this work, since the wedges must stay even as they wrap a curve. Every sheet is matched and book-mirrored before cutting so the figure answers itself across the centre line, and the marquetry itself is cut and assembled by hand, piece by piece. The whole top is then finished to a soft, deep satin sheen that protects the timber without hiding it.

The gilt-bronze gallery is what makes the desk read as formal furniture rather than a plain work surface. It is cast with a repeated baluster and scroll motif and set on a shaped rail, pierced so light passes through it, and its warm gold tone gives a clear bright line above the darker wood below. Functionally it also keeps papers, a blotter, and small items from sliding toward the edge, which matters more on a double-sided desk than on a wall piece. Below, the storage is arranged on both pedestals, banks of drawers stacked in the curved outer faces and additional shallow drawers facing the user, so the desk can be worked from either side. Drawer fronts follow the marquetry pattern of the body so the fronts disappear into the surface when closed, and each is fitted with cast bronze handles and shaped key escutcheons in a warm gilt finish. The interiors are lined and fitted, the drawers run smooth, and where the desk is ordered for modern use we prepare the carcase with discreet cable routing and power cut-outs positioned to your layout so nothing shows at the wall. The open central span gives genuine leg room, and as export furniture the top, pedestals, and mounts are fitted, finished, and packed in-house to travel without damage.

In the room, the Marville works as a proper executive desk set into the centre of a study or home office, where it can be approached from both sides and one person writes while another reads at the opposite edge. It suits a private library, a lawyer's or architect's studio, a boardroom, or a hotel business corner, and its low, horizontal oval proportion keeps it from blocking sightlines or overwhelming a room. As a dressing table or a display piece in a salon it also works, since every face is finished. The warm timber and gold palette pairs naturally with leather-seated chairs, bookcases, green banker lamps, silk and wool textiles, stone floors, and cream or deep-toned walls. There is consistent demand for this kind of desk in the India import furniture market, where buyers in Mumbai and New Delhi specify marquetry writing desks for private studies, law and design offices, and hotel executive suites, where a desk is expected to look formal from all sides rather than only from the front.

Choosing EKAR means working with a high-end furniture customization factory that can build a desk to how you actually sit and store. The overall length and depth, the height of the gallery, the number and depth of drawers, the marquetry motif, the choice of timber, and the warmth of the brass are all set from your drawings or a sample. Veneers are matched and pressed in-house, marquetry is cut by hand, bronze mounts are cast, chased, and gilded to order, and the carcase is built and braced to stay flat over a wide open span. Our Foshan custom furniture factory then inspects, finishes, and export-packs each desk for delivery worldwide, with matching bookcases, cabinets, and library furniture made in the same palette.
